Built in November 1889 on the hill of Ambohidempona, the Observatory was the first Scientific Research Center of Madagascar. It was first led by the French Jesuit Fathers. On January 1 ,1967 , the Observatory was sold by the Jesuits to the Malagasy State for 1 symbolic franc . The Observatory is, since that day, under the supervision of the University of Madagascar, the only Institute that existed at that time . In 1969 a restructuring of the Faculty of Sciences took place. Then, in 1973 , the Observatory was converted into  a Department of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Madagascar, and yet  Professor RAKOTONDRAINIBE had directed it. During the period 1973-1988 , renovation and modernization work was undertakenand a new section, Applied Geophysics, was set up. From 1994, the Observatory took the name of the Institute and Observatory of Geophysics of Antananarivo (IOGA) . In 2003 , IOGA was attached to the Rectorate of the University of Antananarivo. His research works spread across all regions of Madagascar and the Indian Ocean. curren t, the Institute and Observatory of Geophysics of Antananarivo is recognized at the level of the major international scientific networks.
