The ULL obtained its university accreditation in 1997 but its history dates back to 1967 with the creation of the "Fund of the Timbuktu Institute of Luozi".
It becomes autonomous in 2010 following Ministerial Order No. 157 / MINESU / CABMIN / EBK / PK / 2010 of September 27 , 2010 , empowering some extensions of institutions of higher and university education.
